I thought it was called the river Pol

Bought a guide book recently that dates back to the 1930s heres a description of the village and the river Pol
The crazy limewashed little cottages many with outside stone staircases constitute with the towering wooded hillsides and the darkling rocks the chief glory of the place for the charm of Polperro lies less in any individual points of interest than in the general air of rustic simplicity and architectural eccentricity which belong to an age long past. At the side of the old Saxon Bridge where the stream known as the Rafiel joins the head of the inner harbour is the curious old House on Props which fortunately is much safer than it appears and then I can add not a few yards past is the Anchorage perched on the inner harbour wall.
So the river Pol is actually the Rafiel and not very much appears to have changed.
Wow I do like that line...... The crazy lime washed little cottages constitute with the towering wooded hillsides and the darkling rocks the chief glory of the p...

Many thanks for your guest comments.

Weve had some lovely comments in our guest book already this year. One overwhelming theme is to sit relax and watch the ebb and flow of the tide from the window seat. Also lots of comments on great walks friendly people and of course a wonderful selection of pubs
Particularly like the comments from Cinderella Prince Charming and the ugly sisters who all seem to have had a great time over the New Year celebrations.
To have a look at them in more detail please go our Guest Comments page.
Once again many thanks to our guests for their lovely messages.

Polperro Swan savaged by dog

One of the endearing sites of the Polperro harbour are the two Swans who float serenely by and are the subject of many magical photographs. On Easter Saturday one of these beautiful creatures was savaged by a dog.
Here is an eyewitness account from the www.polperro.org website.
On Easter Saturday I came out of Teglios store by the Museum at about 1415 hrs to see a crowd of people on the fish market a lot of shouting going on and a man legging it across the harbour the tide was out. It was then that I saw his dog which looked like a brindled Staffie savaging one of the swans. It had a hold of its breast and was shaking it about violently. The owner grabbed it put it on a lead and then left quickly up Lansallos Street. The swan was very traumatised and just sat in the river for a good 10 minutes without moving. The RSPCA were called and took it away later referring it to bird specialists who scanned it. They confirmed that it had a serious wound on the breast area but also a badly infe...

Ready to go for another year

The Anchorage is looking at its best for another year. It really is a Forth bridge project but if you dont keep on top of the job with the general look and also make sure that the cottage is protected against the elements it can turn out to be costly. Thats our contribution the the prettiest harbour view in the UK.
Wear and tear on the property is inevitable there will always be scrapes and bumps against the walls the bathroom is the one that seems to bear most of this and needs to be repainted every year.
Things always need to be replaced too this year we had new duvet covers and linens with some bright blue cushion covers from Gambia. Some new bedside lamps blue of course are on the way and maybe new bedside tables when we find the right ones.
We now provide guests with towels and you will no longer have to find pound coins for the heating electricity is included in the price.
We had some lovely comments in the guest book last year they are most appreciated the favourite occ...

Getting ready for the year ahead.

Owning a property by the seaside like the Anchorage is a dream come true. However as with any building the Anchorage being fairly elderly and on the harbourside needs lots of care and attention.
Every year after the beating sun of the summer and the battering of the winter weather the cottage needs an MOT.
So what do we have to do this year
Well lets start with the outside. The rendering on the harbourside needed replacing and painting an easy job you may say but remember outside seaside Not only do we need quick drying render and paint we only have a few hours to complete the job when the tide is out.
Windows windows windows. They constantly need repainting. This year we had to replace all of the hinges on 13 windows due to the combination of salt and the sea air many came loose.
The front of the Anchorage looks out onto the Warren a traffic free street. We say traffic free because its only about 45 feet wide and has a nasty bend to negotiate. The only vehicles that can get past...

November in Polperro

Now that the nights are drawing in our thoughts turn to magical Polperro in November. Approaching the village either via the Coombes or from the coastal path is a wonder to behold at any time of year. In the wintertime the first thing you notice is the grey wispy smoke coming from the chimneys of the properties of all sizes then it hits you that wonderful comforting aroma of burning wood fires.
Sometimes it appears from above that the village is sleeping all looks peaceful and quiet. Then there is a decision to make. Stay out in the bracing cold or make our way to one of the fine hostelries with a roaring fire for a pint of local brew and piping hot soup Im there already.
Like many villages across the UK the beginning of November heralds Guy Fawkes night and Polperro is certainly no exception. Weather permitting Peak Rock is the stage for a pyrotechnic display second to none. This year November 5th conveniently falls on a Saturday make that a date for your diary.

How old is The Anchorage

Originally we thought The Anchorage is approximately 300 years old whilst chatting to a local historian one afternoon in the Three Pilchards we were told the cottage could be more like 500 years old. Imagine the tales those walls could tell The original cottage was a lot smaller than the current layout with only one room downstairs and one upstairs.
At around 1955 the harbourside of the cottage was changed considerably with the addition of two extra rooms and the wonderful bay windows.
In the cottage we have two pictures of The Anchorage pre and post 1955 you can certainly notice the difference
Many thanks to the builder who made the changes that enables us and our guests to spend many a happy hour just chilling out and watching that wonderful harbour view.
